News and Updates
Support for electric vehicles in the northeast continues to grow, and states participating in the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network are forging ahead with preparations for the mass market arrival of plug-in cars and trucks and the economic and environmental benefits that these vehicles can deliver.
Under a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, northeastern states are working with stakeholders to build support for electric vehicles and remove barriers to the widespread deployment of EVs. Most recently, participating states released an electric vehicle support pledge to continue building momentum and to demonstrate broad and deep support for electric vehicles in the region....
On behalf of the Transportation and Climate Initiative, Dr. James Winebrake recently conducted an analysis of all freight moving through the northeastern United States.
Dr. Winebrake has recently given several presentations discussing his analysis, and you can download one of his recent PowerPoint presentations here. The presentation shows some examples of emissions, costs and time for freight routes, and potentially sets the stage for additional work in this area.

Private- and public-sector organizations from across the country, including General Motors, Tesla, Coca-Cola, and Northeast Utilities, gathered with representatives from northeast states and clean cities coalitions recently to discuss ways to expedite the deployment of electric vehicles.
The dialogue was the first stakeholder event held to discuss next steps for the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network. The states launched the initiative in October.
A couple of suggestions raised by participants included:
- Identifying best practices for incentives (both monetary and non-monetary) to encourage the sale of electric vehicles and the development of electric vehicle infrastructure.
- Taking action to remove obstacles to electric vehicle...
More than 80 media sources ran a story last week about the launch of the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network due, in part, to an Associated Press piece that helped break the news. The story was picked up by News Day, Business Week, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe to name a few.
The story was also aired extensively on radio and TV networks, including NPR affiliates, Northeast Public Radio and the following TV stations: NWNJ TV (New Jersey – New York), WFMZ-IND TV (Philadelphia), WTXF-FOX (Philadelphia), WUSA-CBS (Washington, DC – Hagerstown, MD), WGGB-ABC (Springfield, MA – Holyoke, MA), WNYT-NBC (Albany – Schenectady – Troy...
Transportation, energy and environment officials from ten northeast states and the District of Columbia announced the formation of the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network on Wednesday. The Network will work to bolster economic growth, maintain the region’s leadership in the clean energy economy and reduce the area’s dependence on oil and its emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
As part of their ongoing collaboration through the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI), the participating jurisdictions will promote all clean vehicles and fuels and facilitate planning for and the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and related infrastructure throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. The group will also work together...
Transportation, environment and energy agency heads from 12 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic jurisdictions released an Agreement to Support Sustainable Communities on June 8.
The states will work together to promote sustainable communities that expand transportation options, promote economic prosperity, enhance natural resource protection, strengthen communities, and minimize environmental impacts. They will promote these communities through enhancement of state-level transportation policies that combine a smart growth land use planning approach with sustainable development concepts, and will work in partnership with community development, economic growth, and housing and land use agencies at the federal, local, and regional levels to foster this development.

Agency heads from the 11 states that make up the Transportation and Climate Initiative approved the group’s first work plan in October.
The plan focuses on four key areas: 1) the development of clean vehicles and fuels, including the creation of a regional electric vehicle network, 2) promoting the development of sustainable communities, 3) implementing communication and information technology throughout the region and 4) improving the efficiency of freight transportation.
More than 90 policy makers and subject area experts from participating states are now engaged in the effort.
The Transportation and Climate Initiative was launched in June 2010 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in...
