Every year, taxpayers pay hundreds of billions of dollars for transportation and related infrastructure—infrastructure that is becoming increasingly vulnerable to flooding and damage from extreme heat as a result of climate change. The Georgetown Climate Center regularly works with communities, states, and the federal government to address climate change impacts in the transportation sector.
The Center has helped states like Vermont with their efforts to rebuild smarter after Hurricane Irene and recently completed more than 100 case studies demonstrating how leaders are responding to the growing threats that climate change impacts pose to America’s roads, airports, transit systems, and infrastructure.
The case studies highlight some of the most innovative approaches being adopted around the country for considering climate change at all stages of decision-making: planning, design, construction, and operations and maintenance.
