Statement from GCC Executive Director Kate Zyla on the Supreme Court West Virginia v. EPA decision

June 30, 2022

“The Supreme Court’s decision today makes it harder for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reduce greenhouse gas pollution at a time when the urgent need to address the causes of climate change is only growing.

While today’s decision represents an unwelcome obstacle to fighting climate change as aggressively as needed, we urge EPA to continue to use all the authorities at its disposal — including its continued authority to regulate greenhouse gas pollution from power plants and other sources — to carry out its mission to protect human health and the environment.

Achieving the needed transition to clean energy and responding to the dangerous impacts of a warming climate, including those that communities are already facing, will require a concerted effort at every level of government. We encourage EPA to continue to work alongside state and local governments to rise to the challenge."
